Four updates affect UK homeowners this week: a confirmed VAT cut on electricity bills, a fast-approaching bill-discount deadline, a low-cost solar option due to become legal in August, and a fresh UK solar generation record. Here's what changed and what to do next.

Electricity bills: VAT cut from October, but not for every nation

The government has confirmed VAT on domestic electricity bills will fall from 5% to 0% between 1 October 2026 and 31 March 2027, per the government's announcement on the electricity VAT cut. GOV.UK estimates it's worth around £45 off the average bill — a modelled saving, not a guaranteed amount.

Great Britain only: Northern Ireland doesn't get this cut directly — the NI Executive receives separate funding instead, as different VAT rules apply there.

Some VAT-exempt small businesses, charities and care homes also qualify. Extending the cut past March 2027 is undecided — the government says that will be considered at a future Budget. £150 Warm Home Discount: act before 23 August to keep it automatic

Around six million households across Britain qualify for an automatic £150 discount this winter through the Warm Home Discount scheme, but only if named on their electricity bill by 23 August 2026, per GOV.UK's reminder about this year's Warm Home Discount deadline. Eligible households typically get Housing Benefit, income-related ESA, Pension Credit or Universal Credit.

Around 250,000 Scottish households get it automatically for the first time this year, but Scotland still runs a mixed system — some households there must apply through their supplier instead.

Plug-in solar panels become legal from 27 August

New regulations make small "plug-in" solar panels — compact devices that connect via a normal wall socket — legal in Great Britain from 27 August 2026, under the regulations bringing plug-in solar panels into force. The rules were made in July but aren't in force yet, so these devices aren't legal to use until that date.

Qualifying devices convert direct sunlight, output up to 800W AC, and plug into a standard socket without importing power for storage beyond limited control use — a lower-cost option for renters and flat-owners who can't fit a rooftop system. Guidance suggests notifying your network operator first, though this isn't confirmed in the regulations themselves; claims that installers or MCS certification are never needed, or wattage limits beyond the 800W device cap, aren't confirmed either — check with a supplier before buying. July was Great Britain's best month yet for solar power

Solar panels supplied a record 14.4% of Great Britain's electricity in July 2026, beating the previous record of 12.4% set in May, per Solar Energy UK's analysis of July's generation data, citing NESO figures. July's solar share was up from 9.6% a year earlier; total generation reached 3.2 TWh for the month, peaking at 44% around midday on 12 July.
