I chose Sundog to supply and install a Froling S4 turbo biomass wood boiler. It cost almost £17,000. It was the second worst mistake of my life. Sundog fundamentally failed to set up the air supply correctly which resulted in the boiler being unable to get anywhere near hot enough. There were two consequences. First. despite burning a huge quantity of logs it couldn't reach a high enough temperature to provide sufficient hot water. Second, the poor combustion produced vast amounts of tar which clogged up the boiler's internal mechanisms. Each time I complained to Sundog they said it was my fault because 'I must be using wet wood'. When they finally checked the moisture content of the wood it was found to be exceptionally dry, way below the accepted definition of less than 20% moisture. With that excuse blown, they switched to blaming my central heating radiators. They never considered that the cause was their own incompetence. In just over two months the boiler failed completely. It was under warranty but Sundog said they were too busy and refused to come and deal with it. I contacted Froling's main agent British Gas Heat Networks. They have been truly splendid. BGHN identified that the air system was at fault because of Sundog's incompetence, and insisted that Sundog correct it and rectify the problems it had caused. Sundog were made to remove the boiler, take it to their works and put it right. A BGHN engineer spent two days at Sundog directing and supervising the remedial work. And he spent a further two days supervising the reinstallation and making sure the boiler ran correctly. Excellent. BGHN also found that Sundog had incorrectly installed the plumbing system connected to the boiler. "3 port back end valve was wrongly configured, with the shoe 180 degrees out. Back end pump wrongly configured - now set as a PWM type pump. Expansion vessel was incorrectly set up (2.5 Bar in the bag) this was reduced to 1.2 bar and cold fill set at 1.2 Bar." Prior to that, I must have complained over a dozen times to Sundog that the Bar pressure had no stability, moving wildly between 0, 3, and back to 0 on any one day. Sundog said it didn't matter. But in the above quote these words explain why it behaved like that: 'Wrongly', 'wrongly' and 'incorrectly'. So Sundog failed on the air system. And it failed on those three issues as well. The good news is that: 1. The Froling boiler now does what it was designed to do; it runs like a finely tuned car and produces masses of hot water. 2. Sundog is no longer an agent for Froling. However, I see that on their website they still advertise their ability to supply and install biomass boilers of other makes. So beware! Sundog has never, never, ever apologised for the shambles its incompetence caused. Never. Not once. Not even remotely. Avoid the heartache, avoid Sundog.
